The Evolving Astronomy Job Market: Fall 2025 Update
Amit Vishwas Cornell University
We’ve entered another busy season for the astronomy job market! As part of its ongoing efforts to track and support employment trends, the AAS Committee on Employment has compiled updated data from the AAS Job Register through October 2025.
What We Are Seeing So Far
As of October 2025, total job ads (700+) are below last year’s pace, marking the first year-over-year decline since 2020. Postdoctoral positions continue to make up the majority of postings however, most job categories — from faculty positions to scientific staff roles — have seen fewer postings compared to 2024.
Monthly trends point to a familiar Fall-Winter hiring peak but also indicate a dip in overall activity. This moderation reflects not just trends in astronomy but also broader patterns in the academic and research job markets, where hiring has softened slightly amid economic uncertainty and tighter institutional budgets.

Context & Outlook
Even with apparent slowdown, the overall structure of the astronomy job market remains stable. The long-term trend still shows recovery compared to the decline in 2020. While institutions may be exercising more caution in hiring, astronomy and space science remain vibrant fields with growing intersections in data science, instrumentation, and interdisciplinary research — areas where many early-career astronomers are finding new opportunities.
For those who have made the transition to careers outside of academia and those considering making the transition, consider joining the new Beyond Astronomy Career Network on LinkedIn! While networking is always an important component of job hunting, it's particularly important in a softer job market. The LinkedIn group is a good way to learn from astronomers who have made similar career transitions and make connections helpful for finding future positions.
