The American Astronomical Society (AAS) is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the Harlow Shapley Visiting Lectureship Program. Two parallel opportunities are available: one for prospective Visiting Lecturers and another for organizations to host astronomers in 2026.

Applications are due 31 October 2025 — apply now!

Background & Vision

The Shapley Visiting Lectureship Program, established in the 1950s, brings professional astronomers to colleges and communities to deliver in-person astronomy presentations — both in academic settings and public forums. Through lectures, classroom visits, star parties, and community events, Shapley Lecturers connect people of all backgrounds with the wonders of the universe.

This year, two application streams are available:

  • Visiting Lecturer Applications: For astronomers interested in sharing their expertise with diverse audiences through public lectures and outreach activities. The AAS covers travel and logistical support for selected lecturers.
  • Host Site Applications: For schools, colleges, community organizations, and other groups wishing to host visiting astronomers. Host sites help organize events and ensure the broadest possible community engagement.

Program Goals & Impact

“Our mission is to enhance and share humanity’s scientific understanding of the universe in the most inclusive manner possible,” said Dr. Tom Rice, AAS Education Program Manager. “By opening applications both to lecturers and to host sites, we are building stronger, more reciprocal connections between scientists and the communities they serve.”

Over the past several years, the Shapley Program has brought astronomers to campuses and communities across the country, ranging from large universities to small liberal arts and community colleges. These visits have sparked student curiosity, supported classroom learning, and created opportunities for the public to engage directly with scientists.
