Workshop Descriptions
NASA SMD Proposal Writing Workshop
Sunday, 6 October, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
$0 / In-Person
The success of scientists depends upon their ability to obtain funding. One of the largest challenges is to create strong proposals. Using Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (ROSES) from NASA as a template, this workshop will focus on teaching the audience key points to communicating science through successful proposal writing. As a result of this session, participants will be able to understand the proposal writing, reviewing, and selection process for federally funded research. This will also help those who have previously submitted proposals improve their performance. How to understand one’s values and maintain those throughout this process will also be focused on. Story tellers will add unique and important lessons learned to the session.

JWST Cycle 4 Proposal Planning Office Hours
Sunday, 6 October, 2:00 - 5:00 pm
$0 / Hybrid
Observations with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have become some of the most sought after resources in astronomy, with over 1900 proposals submitted for Cycle 3 in 2023. The planetary science community has seen a decrease in percentage of total awarded time over the first 3 cycles as other sub-disciplines have increased their share of submitted proposals. With the deadline scheduled for the week after the DPS meeting (October 16th), we are planning a hands-on workshop to support our community in the lead-up to the deadline and encourage proposal submission. Specifically, we will spend ~15 minutes at the beginning of the workshop outlining changes for Cycle 4 and provide an update on the telescope and instruments. The remainder of the time is planned as “drop-in office hours” where attendees can get the maximum use out of the expertise from STScI in the room to hone their science and technical cases. Questions and proposal concepts will be kept confidential through one-on-one interaction. Attendees can come and go throughout the workshop as they see fit. We encourage all current and future JWST proposers to attend, especially first-time users and early

Occultation Science Pathways
Sunday, 6 October, 2:00 - 5:30 pm
$0 / In-Person
In recent years the number and quality of occultation campaigns has risen dramatically due largely to the quality of the results from the Gaia mission. This workshop is meant for anyone actively engaged in occultation-based research as well as those interested in becoming involved. The goal of the workshop is to provide a forum to discuss the challenges and responsibilities of conducting investigations that often rely on a large involvement from the broad community. Also on the agenda is a discussion of future projects, both short and long-term, especially those that would benefit from a larger more coordinated involvement. This workshop is not intended as a forum for the presentation of scientific results which is more appropriate for the sessions of the main meeting. Anyone wishing to make a short presentation on a topic should send a brief note to Marc Buie ([email protected]) with a title, a very short description, and a suggestion on the amount of time needed to be used in building the program.
