In 2019 the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) team produced the first-ever image of a black hole — the supermassive one at the center of galaxy Messier 87 in Virgo. Now the EHT has unveiled a new view of M87's dark heart based on polarization measurements, which reveal the shape of the magnetic field (depicted as curved lines) in the hot ring of gas around the massive object. Read more about the image and how magnetic fields shape the galaxy's energetic outflows in our AAS Nova article, the EHT press release, and two articles (#1, #2) in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.
