Enter the Royal Society Publishing 2018 Photo Competition

The Royal Society Publishing Photography Competition celebrates the power of photography to communicate science and the role great images play in making science accessible to a wide audience. It is run in collaboration with the Royal Society’s journals. As in 2017, the 2018 competition includes an astronomy category and is open for entries through 31 August.

Lunar Spotlight, South Pole, Antarctica

The competition (#RSPPhotoComp) is free to enter. The overall winner will receive a prize of £500 (or currency equivalent), and winners of the categories not chosen as the overall winner will receive £250 (or currency equivalent).

The photo above is last year's astronomy category winner: "Lunar Spotlight, South Pole, Antarctica" by Daniel Michalik, who works on the South Pole Telescope (left-most of the three instruments visible at right in the photo). Ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere create a light pillar underneath the Moon, producing a dramatic spotlight on the out-of-this-world appearance of the frozen Antarctic plateau.
