Opportunities to Cooperate on Global Space Science Outreach

Hans Haubold UN Office for Outer Space Affairs

We are taking this opportunity to raise awareness for opportunities to cooperate on international education and outreach in space science through the United Nations-affiliated Regional Centres for Space Science and Technology Education. At present Regional Centres are located in India, China, Morocco, Nigeria, Jordan, Brazil, and Mexico.

Since 1988 curricula for nine-month postgraduate courses in the fields of remote sensing and geographic information systems, satellite meteorology and global climate, satellite communications, space and atmospheric science, and global navigation satellite systems have been developed through UN international expert meetings. Since 1991 these curricula have been enhanced in a series of annual workshops and follow-up projects of the UN’s Basic Space Science Initiative. The courses are offered annually by the Regional Centres to participants from all 194 UN Member States.

Here are two recent updates from the Regional Centres in Africa and Western Asia:

UNISPACE+50 in 2018, organized by the United Nations to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first UN Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, will build a comprehensive Space2030 agenda for the contribution of space activities to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, addressing overarching, long-term development concerns, based on the peaceful exploration and uses of outer space.
