AAS Journals Editor in Chief Search

Timothy Bastian NRAO

Over the past two years, the AAS has continued to implement the strategic recommendations of the 2014 Journals Futures Task Force, including creating topic corridors for its flagship journals The Astrophysical Journal and The Astronomical Journal and consolidating peer-review support for these journals at one AAS editorial office based at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) in Tucson, Arizona. Another recommendation was to conduct open searches for the AAS journals Editor in Chief (EiC) and ApJ Letters Editor when current contracts expire.

To that end, the AAS Publications Board has posted an AAS Editor-in-Chief job ad in the AAS Job Register and convened a search committee comprising Publications Board members, current and past AAS Councilors, and others with editorial or professional experience in scientific publishing:

  • Tim Bastian, National Radio Astronomy Observatory, AAS Publications Board Chair
  • Eileen Friel, Indiana University, AAS Publications Board Member
  • Robert Kennicutt, Cambridge University, Former ApJ EiC (2000-2006)
  • Anneila Sargent, California Institute of Technology, Past AAS President (2000-2002)
  • Gene Sprouse, Stony Brook University, Former APS EiC, AAS EiC Search Committee Chair
  • Julie Steffen, AAS Director of Publishing
  • Stephen Unwin, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, AAS Councilor
  • Joel Parriott, AAS Deputy Executive Officer and Director of Public Policy, ex officio

The search committee will begin consideration of qualified applicants on 15 March 2017 (the earlier application deadline of 1 March is being extended). Please contact any member of the search committee with questions.
