Light Pollution at the AAS Meeting in Grapevine, Texas

Patrick Seitzer University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

There will two events concerning light pollution at the forthcoming AAS meeting that should be of interest to anyone who uses ground-based astronomical data or is concerned with the importance of protecting the night sky:

  • A workshop on "Light Pollution Solutions that Communities Can Use" will take place on Tuesday, 3 January, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm in the Mustang 6 room at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center. This workshop is designed to share information that people can put into practice. Confirmed representatives are coming from Kitt Peak National Observatory, Lowell Observatory, the International Dark Sky Association, and Monrad Engineering. A plenary session will be followed by breakout sessions.
  • The plenary session by Martin AubĂ© on Thursday, 5 January, from 8:30 am to 9:20 am will cover "The LED Outdoor Lighting Revolution: Opportunities, Threats, and Mitigation."

Please attend to learn about recent victories in the battle against light pollution, but also about recent losses and what can be done to reverse them.
