AAS Volunteer Opportunity – Service to the Profession

Timothy Lawlor Pennsylvania State University

The AAS Doxsey Travel Prize Committee is seeking one new member to serve for a three-year term beginning immediately. Candidates must be AAS members, have completed their doctorate at least two years ago, and be willing to evaluate ~100 dissertation talk abstracts in November each year. Candidates from traditionally underrepresented groups or in the early stages of their careers are especially encouraged to apply. Interested individuals should contact Tim Lawlor.

In January 2021, out of approximately 60 abstracts submitted, nine students received the Doxsey Travel Prizes and eight received honorable mentions. Earlier this year, the AAS created a formal prize committee to improve judging procedures for Doxsey Travel Prize. The changes recognize that serving as a judge is an important service to our community and that having a dissertation talk abstract judged equitably is vital for students at this crucial transition. For more information about the Prize, please see the AAS website.
