#GivingTuesday: Make an Impact

Diane Frendak

Diane Frendak American Astronomical Society (AAS)

It’s here! #GivingTuesday is a global movement dedicated to celebrating generosity, and this year, the day to support your favorite nonprofit is 27 November. As you think about which organizations you’ll contribute to this week, please consider making a gift to help secure the future of the AAS and support its mission to enhance and share humanity’s scientific understanding of the universe.

Giving Tuesday 2018

Membership dues cover only a portion of the Society’s annual budget. Your unrestricted support through a gift to our General Fund ensures that we continue to invest in areas where they are needed most.

For those seeking a legacy investment, you’re welcome to give to the AAS Initiative Endowment Fund. Professor Jeremiah P. Ostriker, our 1972 Helen B. Warner Prize recipient and our 1980 Henry Norris Russell Lecturer, made a generous contribution to get the fund started. Once established, the AAS Initiative Endowment Fund would provide a steady source of funds on which the Society can rely in perpetuity.

The centerpiece theme of the Society’s fundraising campaign this year is “Celebrating Scientists on the Move,” featuring AAS and Division travel grants and prizes. There is still time to give to the funds which support your fellow scientists to go forth and share the excitement of astronomy with the world.

Looking to support our science while maximizing your tax benefits? Consider a gift of appreciated assets such as stocks, bonds, or mutual funds. You can claim a charitable deduction for the full market value of the securities on the date the gift is made. Moreover, gifts of securities are not subject to capital gains tax.

BONUS: Donate $250 or more to any fund or mix of funds and you’ll be invited to the Donor Reception and Donor Lounge at the 2019 winter and summer AAS meetings.

Thank you for supporting our community!
