Astrophysics Input Sought for AMO2020

AMO2020

The Decadal Assessment on Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) Science (AMO2020) has invited me to give a presentation about astrophysics based on AMO science and techniques on Thursday, 20 September 2018. They are interested in the current vision for and broad perspectives on this subject.

The specific questions that the AMO2020 co-chairs have asked me to address include:

  1. What new scientific opportunities in astrophysics connect strongly with the AMO intellectual span, such as precision spectroscopy and simulation of dynamics?
  2. What can AMO contribute to the building of new tools that may be needed by astrophysics? New tools such as laser interferometer, atom interferometer, and advanced telescopes?
  3. What areas of astrophysics could be enabled by tools of AMO science?
  4. Are there astrophysics discoveries or tools that could further our understanding of AMO science?

I am reaching out to all AAS members for your input in order to provide the broadest possible vision and perspective. If you would like to provide input, please send me your answers to the above specific questions, and possibly a couple of PowerPoint slides that I could incorporate into the presentation, by Friday, 14 September 2018.
