Caroline HerschelThe Caroline Herschel Prize Lectureship has been established by the William Herschel Society (WHS) in Association with the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) to celebrate Caroline's memory by supporting promising female astronomers early in their careers.

The prize lectureship will be awarded for achievements in research and/or instrument building and/or communication and/or teaching.

For the purposes of this award, astronomy is broadly defined to include astrophysics, cosmology, astroparticle physics, astrobiology, astrochemistry, solar physics, solar-terrestrial physics, planetary science, and meteoritics. To be eligible applicants should be at least one year post-PhD (from their viva date), not yet established in a tenured position, and normally working in the UK.

The winner will receive a cash prize of £500 and deliver a prize lecture twice: first at the University of Bath in November as part of the WHS's Astronomy Lectures Series, and subsequently as an RAS public lecture in London. Reasonable travel expenses within the UK will be refunded.

Applications are due by 30 April.

And, while you're thinking about prizes, remember that nominations for AAS awards are due by 30 June. All Society members are encouraged to nominate worthy colleagues or themselves for recognition by the AAS. It is not only the monetary prize but also the honor and distinction that can mean so much for an astronomer's career. A prize also adds luster to the recipient's department and/or institution in the eyes of the academic and scientific communities.
