The opportunities are open to candidates from both China and overseas. The candidates should have received or expected to have received a Ph.D. in space physics, planetary sciences, geosciences, or astronomy/astrophysics before the start of work. The postdoctoral researchers are expected to perform research under the mentoring professors in the department in the relevant fields and have the opportunity to conduct independent research.

Sun Yat-sen University is one of the top comprehensive universities in China. The department is the administrative home of the Planetary Environmental and Astrobiological Research Laboratory (PEARL), which is part of the Center for Excellence in Comparative Planetology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and one of the founders of the Chinese University Union for Planetary Sciences. Research areas in the Department cover solar physics, space physics, planetary atmospheres, planetary geology, solar system small bodies, and exoplanet atmospheres. The research faculties in the Department participated in the Chinese lunar exploration missions Chang'E 3, 4, and 5, the Tianwen-1 Mars exploration mission, the Tianwen-2 near-Earth asteroid sample return and active asteroid exploration missions, as well as many NASA, ESA, and JAXA missions or the related data analyses, and perform ground- or space-based observations of asteroids and comets. The Department has built or is building a near-Earth space monitoring base, planetary environment simulation and analysis laboratory, the Lenghu planetary science observatory, and the Large Automated Network of Remote All-sky Observatories (LANRAO) for Meteor Surveillance. The Department also conducts various EP/O activities, including high-school research projects, summer schools, and summer camps.
