Job Description

The Kapteyn Astronomical Institute invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in the field of high-redshift galaxy formation. The position is anticipated to be offered for two years. The successful candidates should hold a PhD in Astronomy at the moment of taking the position. The candidate should have either observational or theoretical expertise (along the lines of having worked with simulations/semi-analytic models) in any of the areas of early galaxy formation, black holes and/or reionization.

The postdoctoral fellow will be embedded in a team that aims at combining the latest cosmological simulations and semi-analytical models to build a predictive framework for galaxy formation and reionization in the first billion years. The results from such research will have enormous implications for forthcoming observatories, specially the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), Euclid, the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) and the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA).

The Kapteyn Astronomical Institute at the University of Groningen is world-wide recognised for the breadth and quality of its research and is one of the four Dutch astronomical departments constituting NOVA. The Institute is located at the same site as the low-energy division of the Netherlands Institute for Space Research (SRON), which gives Groningen a strategic position within Dutch Astronomy.

Applicants should send a single pdf to [email protected] including: a brief CV (2-3 pages), complete list of publications, a short statement of research experience and future research interests (2-3 pages), the names and email addresses of three referees and indicate a preferred starting date. They should also arrange for three reference letters to be sent to this address by the application deadline. Informal enquiries about these positions are welcome and should be sent to Dr. Pratika Dayal at [email protected]. The deadline for applications is 30th July 2024. The review process will start immediately, but applications will be considered until the position is filled. The exact date is negotiable.

The University of Groningen is an equal-opportunity employer. Employees have multiple benefits, including paid holidays, pension, and sick and maternity leave and salary is commensurate with research experience.
