Job Description
The Department of Physics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) invites applications for a Research Assistant Professor position in observational astronomy within any of the following directions:
1. Galaxy evolution, including focuses on interstellar medium and/or stellar population.
2. Astronomical instrumentation
The position is ideal for candidates who have finished at least 1 term of postdoc and want to become more competitive for a tenure-track position in a few years. Nearly all past RAPs in the department have gotten tenure-track positions in the department or at other universities.
The Department has a diverse research portfolio including several faculty members working in the field of astrophysics. In particular, we are actively developing the AMASE instrument and survey, which will provide high spectral resolution integral field spectroscopy for the study of the ISM in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies. We also plan to obtain access to other integral field spectroscopy observing capability through purchasing telescope time or buying into other survey projects. Candidates whose research direction could synergize with any of these efforts will be ideal.
The appointee(s) should demonstrate a strong record of research accomplishments and potential for establishing significant externally funded research programmes, and will be expected to undertake light teaching duties at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Competitive salary and benefit packages commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered. Appointment(s) will initially be made on contract basis for up to three years, renewable subject to performance and mutual agreement.

Compensation and Benefits
The appointee and their spouse/dependent children are provided with medical benefits according to the Staff Medical Benefits Scheme of the University. Top-up medical insurance can also be purchased with a very modest cost. Employer will also make contributions to the retirement account of the employee as specified by the Mandatory Provident Fund scheme of HKSAR government.
Salary will be paid monthly in Hong Kong dollar which is pegged to USD with a conversion rate about 1 USD = 7.8 HKD.
