Volunteer Compensation Task Force

Goals: The Task Force is set to determine if/when/at what level volunteers for AAS committees can be compensated for their service.

Term: The term is temporary, starting in October 2022 and ending in May 2023 when the Task Force is expected to present their final reports to the Board of Trustees.

Charge: Issues related to unpaid labor and service have become important to our understanding of who can participate in committee work. Are there circumstances in which we can compensate “volunteers” for their service either monetarily or through fee/registration waivers? How would we implement this practice fairly? What are the financial implications for the AAS of different options? If some form of compensation is deemed a good policy, the Task Force should consider who will act as a “manager” and how we handle cases in which a volunteer does carry through with their responsibility. If remuneration is recommended, the Task Force should generate a set of tiered policies at different financial levels for the Board to consider. Please provide a written update by the end of the calendar year (to be discussed at the January board meeting and Strategic Assembly in Seattle in January 2023) and a full report by the end of May (to be discussed at the June Board meeting and Strategic Assembly).
