Get Your March On! Know Before You Go

AAS + March For ScienceThe March for Science occurs this Saturday, 22 April, with the main event in Washington, DC, and more than 500 satellite marches in other cities around the United States and worldwide. Get your gear together and “know before you go” with these last-minute tips, resources, and logistics considerations.

RSVP FOR YOUR LOCAL MARCH — The March for Science organizers have asked all participants to RSVP in advance online so they can track the event’s global impact.

DOWNLOAD THE APP — The March’s official app is available for download at http://ddut.ch/MFS.

LISTEN TO SCIENCE FRIDAY — National Public Radio’s weekly science show will feature AAS Past President Meg Urry (Yale University). Don’t miss it! Check your local NPR station for the on-air schedule.

WHAT’S YOUR SIGN? — Show your support! Awesome March signs are free to download from AAAS and Sense About Science USA, or get inspired at etsy. Share your favorite posters on Twitter and Instagram with #AASmarches (but keep it rated G, please).

WHAT’S YOUR MESSAGE? — The AAS Council has endorsed the March’s principles and goals, which include advocating for robust federal funding for all scientific disciplines and promoting diversity and inclusion. Ready for your impromptu interview with your local news outlet? Brush up with our Reference Guide for How to Advocate for Science. You can also tell us your reason for supporting the March to be included in the #AASmarches social media campaign.

DON’T FORGET — Charge your phone beforehand! Bring a water bottle, snacks, sunscreen, and a hat. Wear comfortable shoes. Check the weather forecast, and be prepared!

GET YOUR AAS + MARCH FOR SCIENCE T-SHIRT — Whether you’re marching in Washington, DC, or any other city worldwide, show your AAS pride by wearing our special AAS March for Science T-shirt, available in an array of colors and sizes. Even if it’s too late to get it delivered by Saturday, it’ll make a great post-March souvenir!

TRAVEL HELP AND DAY-OF EVENTS IN WASHINGTON, DC
AAS Travel Resources:
Pre-March AAS Open House, 7:00 to 9:00 am ET:
  • 7:00 am ET start with morning refreshments.
  • Please let us know if you plan to stop by.
  • AAS Executive Office, 1667 K Street NW, Suite 800, Washington, DC 20006.
  • The entrance to the AAS Building is on 17th Street just north of the intersection with K Street. Come in the side entrance on the north side of the foyer, and check in with building security. The security staff at the desk will have the list of AAS members and guests who RSVP’d for the open house.
  • The AAS Offices are on the 8th floor and security staff will direct you to the elevators.
Rally and March:
  • March Start Location: National Mall, north of the Washington Monument; Constitution Avenue NW between 15th Street and 17th Street
  • 8:00 am: Washington Monument grounds open.
  • 9:00 am: Teach-ins begin.
  • 10:00 am: Main stage rally program begins.
  • 2:00 pm: March begins. Route: The March will form on the Washington Monument grounds and proceed over to Constitution Avenue NW at 15th Street, then east to 3rd Street NW, then south on 3rd Street NW into Union Square.
Post-March Happy Hour Celebration at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS):
  • 5:30 to 7:00 pm ET
  • AAAS Headquarters, 1200 New York Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20005.
