US graduate students in science, technology, engineering, health, mathematics, and related fields are invited to apply for ComSciCon 2017, the 5th annual Communicating Science Workshop. The workshop will take place 8-10 June 2017 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the application deadline is Wednesday, 1 March. Acceptance to the workshop is competitive; attendance is free and travel support and lodging will be provided to accepted applicants.

Workshop participants will build the communication skills that scientists and other technical professionals need to express complex ideas to the general public, experts in other fields, and their peers. This year's workshop will include panels on:
  • Media and Journalism
  • Science Advocacy
  • Digital Storytelling
  • Diversity in Science Communication
  • Story Collider

In additional to these discussions ample time is allotted for networking with science communication experts and developing science outreach collaborations with fellow graduate students. Workshop participants will produce an original piece of science writing and receive feedback from workshop attendees and professional science communicators, including journalists, authors, public policy advocates, educators, and more.

Founded in 2013 by graduate students at Harvard University and MIT, over 500 graduate students nationwide have already participated in ComSciCon programs, including the annual national workshops and local workshops which have been started by ComSciCon alumni across the country. Attendees have founded new science communication organizations in collaboration with other students at the event, published over 80 articles written at the conference in popular publications with national impact, and formed lasting networks with our student alumni and invited experts.
