Society of Physics Students 2017 Summer Internship Program

Society of Physics StudentsThe Society of Physics Students (SPS) is a professional association designed for undergraduate students who have an interest in astronomy, physics, and the physical sciences. Applications are now being accepted for the 2017 SPS summer internship program! The SPS Intern program supports the education and professional development of highly-skilled students while providing opportunities to network with other passionate students and professionals in the physical sciences. This goes far beyond your standard internship experience.

The SPS Intern program offers positions in scientific research, education, outreach, and policy with various organizations such as the American Institute of Physics (AIP), the American Physical Society (APS), the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT), NASA Goddard, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Students are paired with organizations that meet their passion and interests to ensure that the experience is be meaningful and memorable. Throughout the summer, interns may participate in an array of activities, including science research with national labs, working with legislative bodies on Capitol Hill, science writing, coding, and developing educational outreach activities. What’s Included: The summer internship program takes place between 30 May and 4 August 2017. In addition to a $5,000 stipend, all interns are provided housing alongside other SPS interns, a commuting allowance for travel within the Washington, DC, Metro area, travel reimbursement between the intern's home location and Washington, DC, and up to $1,000 to present at a national conference in the year after the internship.

Upon arrival in Washington DC, interns will meet and attend an orientation designed to provide the tools needed to make the most of the summer, and learn all about the summer’s activities. In addition to meaningful projects at each intern's worksite, the program includes an array of educational, outreach, and social activities to fully experience the breadth of the physical science community. At the end of the summer, interns participate in a society-wide symposium to present their work and learn about one another’s experiences. All-in-all, the SPS intern program provides participants with an AWESOME, action-packed summer experience!

How to Apply: To apply to the SPS summer intern program, applicants must be undergraduates and members of the SPS national organization. Applicants must have at least two years of college physics (or equivalent) and US citizenship may be required for some positions. Graduating seniors starting graduate school in Fall 2017 are eligible to apply. The application deadline is 15 January 2017. Apply online.
