The American Institute of Physics (AIP) has published a new policy guide on visa and immigration policy for the physical sciences community. The guide is intended to help readers understand the current US visa and immigration policy landscape as it relates to science, students, researchers, and other technical specialists.

AIP notes that international students, researchers, and workers have long been an important part of US science and engineering, particularly in roles requiring doctoral degrees. The guide provides background on recent policy developments affecting international members of the scientific community and is expected to be updated periodically as new developments arise from federal agencies, Congress, the courts, state governments, and institutions. Readers seeking guidance on specific situations should consult their institutional offices or legal counsel.

AIP also recently published a statistical report on international students in US physics and astronomy graduate programs. The report notes that international students have consistently represented about 42% of first-year enrollments in physics and astronomy graduate programs over the past two decades, and that non-US citizens have accounted for slightly less than half of physics and astronomy PhDs awarded in the US during much of that period.
