Call for SGMA Committee Members

Yuxi Lu Ohio State University

The AAS Committee for Sexual-Orientation and Gender Minorities in Astronomy (SGMA) works to promote equality for sexual-orientation and gender minorities within our profession, including those identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, questioning, queer, or asexual.

We welcome applications to join the SGMA committee for a three-year term starting in June 2026. Applications are due by 18 April 2026 at 11:59 pm ET. We are looking to recruit at least two new members. To apply, please fill out this form.

Individuals at any career stage are invited to apply, and non-AAS members may apply as long as they become members if selected. Committee members are expected to support and promote the goals of the committee and to participate in monthly Zoom meetings.

SGMA seeks diverse representation to represent the full demography of the AAS, and committee membership is open to anyone who is interested — astronomers of all genders, sexes, career stages, races, ethnicities, neurodiversity or disability status, and sexual orientations, including allies, are encouraged to apply. The committee especially encourages people of color to apply.

For full transparency, we have also made our evaluation rubric public for potential applicants to refer to when drafting their applications. To select committee members, a few members of our current committee will first anonymize the applications. Each committee member will then evaluate the anonymous applications based on the rubric. Finally, the current committee members will vote to select the new members. Note that no applicants will be eliminated based on the rubric alone; committee members can vouch for applicants even if the grades are low based on the rubric.
