Application Open for the NSBP/SAO Event Horizon Telescope 2026 Scholars Program

Richard Anantua University of Texas, San Antonio

The National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP) and the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) group at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) are sponsoring the NSBP/SAO EHT Scholars program. Summer Interns will work on projects that range across observational, computational, theoretical, and engineering aspects of black hole research. The research will culminate in a research report and presentation to the team. Program benefits include mentoring by experts in black hole astrophysics, participation in a large supportive research group, and participation in the broader SAO summer internship community.

This will be an in-person internship at the SAO. The typical program will start before 15 June 2026 and last 8–10 weeks. Interns are paid a stipend of $800/week, and there is support for the presentation of research results at a conference or workshop.

Apply by 1 February 2026

Our application is available at solaa.si.edu by searching "SAO-EHT Scholars." Using the SOLAA portal, please submit a resume and a 1-2 page description of interests, along with three reference letters.
