AIP Shares Impacts of Federal Restrictions on Graduate Programs

The American Institute of Physics (AIP) has published a report on how recent restrictions in federal grants have impacted astronomy and physics programs, especially at the graduate level. The report, Impacts of Restrictions on Federal Grant Funding in Physics and Astronomy Graduate Programs, describes how recent events have impacted 115 departments.

Overall, 37% of the responding department chairs said they expect to enroll fewer first-year graduate students in the fall of 2025 than the previous year, while 55% expect to enroll about the same number. The report comments on graduate admissions and faculty grants' funding cuts, and includes anonymized comments from several department chairs on the current situation.
