Job Description

The Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (KIAA) at Peking University invites applications for postdoctoral research positions on Early Growth and Evolution of Quasars. The initial appointment will be for two years, renewable for a third year subject to a performance evaluation and the availability of funding.

We seek qualified applicants to work with Prof. Kohei Inayoshi on the following topics:

(1) Black hole growth and formation: Conducting radiation hydrodynamic simulations of the formation and growth of massive black holes in high-redshift galaxies. A particular focus will be modeling the spectral energy distributions of high-redshift galaxies, accreting black holes, and JWST-identified objects (e.g., little red dots).

(2) Co-evolution of AGNs and host galaxies: Studying the connection between high-redshift AGNs and host galaxies.

Applicants with experience on observational and expertise in JWST data analyses are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants with strong backgrounds in either theoretical or observational research are welcome.

Astrophysics at Peking University includes a total of 25 faculty, 30 postdoctoral fellows, 90 graduate students, 120 undergraduates, and many visiting scholars. KIAA is located on the historic grounds of PKU, has English as the working language, and regularly sponsors thematic workshops and conferences to provide a platform for national and international scientific exchanges. Peking University astronomy hosts the CSST PKU Science Center, which will play a pivotal role in analysis of survey data from the Chinese Space Station Telescope. For more information, see kiaa.pku.edu.cn

START DATE: flexible, with preferred start dates in April/September 2026

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, or related fields completed or expected by the start date, and a demonstrated record of research excellence. Preference will be given to applicants within 3 years of their PhD diploma. Candidates of any nationality are encouraged to apply.
