Job Description

The Department invites applications for Tier 1 NSERC Canada Research Chairs. Tier 1 Chairs are awarded to outstanding researchers recognized by their peers as world leaders in their field. These seven-year, once-renewable chairs are funded at $200,000 per year and contribute to the salary of the chairholder.

The Department is seeking an energetic expert in Physics who can conduct research in astrophysics and teach in all areas of physics from the undergraduate level to the postgraduate degree (https://www.fsg.ulaval.ca/en/departments/physics-engineering-physics-and-optics).

The U. Laval Astrophysics research group focuses on connecting fundamental physics with astronomical observations and aims at understanding the fundamental laws of the Universe and unravelling the evolution and formation of galaxies. In particular, the research areas cover extragalactic astronomy, star formation, interstellar medium, active galactic nuclei, galaxy clusters, simulations and instrumentations, at all physical scales and wavelengths. The group is involved in integrate field spectroscopy, the Observatoire du Mont-Mégantic, Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, SKA, and CASTOR. It is part of the Center for Research in Astrophysics of Quebec (https://craq-astro.ca).

Among the job’s requirements, are:

·  PhD in physics or in a discipline relevant to the research field of this position for more than 10 years;

·  Ability to conduct university-level research at the level required of a Canada Research Chair Tier1 in the identified field (with a publication and funding record, international collaborations, knowledge-sharing activities, and leadership above the referee group average);

·  Aptitude or potential for mentoring graduate students and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels with commitment to pedagogical innovation;

·  Ability to communicate and integrate into the institution’s French-speaking environment within a reasonable timeframe;

·  Potential for commitment to service to the community.
