Job Description

Postdoctoral Researchers in Galactic Archaeology (2 positions)

The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Macquarie University and the Sydney Institute for Astronomy at the University of Sydney are each seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Galactic Archaeology, to work with data from the international Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey (S5) collaboration.

The position at Macquarie University, working with Professor Daniel Zucker, is focused on the analysis and interpretation of the large (and expanding) body of spectroscopic data on stellar streams in the Southern Hemisphere, as well as the exploitation of ancillary data sets. The objective is to understand the properties of these streams and their progenitors, in order to trace the accretion history of the Milky Way and the properties of its stellar halo.

The position at the University of Sydney, working with Professor Geraint Lewis, will be to undertake numerical modelling of the tidal streams, with the goal of determining the dynamical history of the tidal streams and the properties of the dark matter halo of the Milky Way. Both researchers will also have the opportunity to take part in the ongoing S5 observational program.

The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences is located on the Wallumattagal Campus of Macquarie University in the leafy suburb of North Ryde, less than 30 minutes by train from the Sydney Central Business District, and bordering on the picturesque Lane Cove National Park. The Sydney Institute for Astronomy is part of the School of Physics and is situated on the main Camperdown Campus of the University of Sydney, just minutes from the heart of the city. Sydney itself was ranked the world’s third most liveable city by the Economist in 2019, and generally ranks in the top 10 of cities with the highest quality of living.
