Job Description
The Astronomy & Astrophysics Department at the University of California, San Diego invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar to investigate the properties of low-mass stars, brown dwarfs, and exoplanets. A successful candidate will have experience in at least one of the following: spectroscopy, astrometry, photometry, the MESA code, and/or spectral modeling.
The successful candidate will analyze data from various observing programs, possibly including Keck/NIRSPEC, Gemini/IGRINS, IRTF/SpeX, Hubble/WFC3, and JWST/NIRSpec. The ideal candidate will lead an independent research program, collaborate on ongoing projects, design and lead observing campaigns, and mentor students. The position also includes training in essential academic skills such as proposal writing and outreach.
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in astronomy/astrophysics, physics, or a closely related field by the start date
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience planning, scheduling, and executing optical/IR observations
- Experience with photometric and spectroscopic data reduction and analysis
- Experience with astrometric measurements of point sources
- Interest in advanced spectroscopic analysis methods (e.g., forward-modeling, autoencoders, etc.).
The preferred start date is on or around September 22, 2025, although an earlier start date can be negotiated. The initial appointment will be for 2 years, with the expectation of a one-year renewal pending funding availability.
