Job Description

An assistant research scientist position (i.e., postdoc will full employee benefits) in Galactic and stellar archaeology under the mentorship of Prof. Kevin Schlaufman is available in the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) William H. Miller III Department of Physics & Astronomy. Expertise in Galactic and/or stellar astrophysics is essential and research experience in astronomical surveys is desirable.

The anticipated start date for this position is late spring, summer, or early fall 2025, and the successful candidate should possess a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or physics by their start date. The initial assistant research scientist appointment will have a duration of two years with the possibility of extension to a third year upon mutual agreement.

In collaboration with Prof. Schlaufman, the assistant research scientist will explore the formation and evolution of the Milky Way using individual stellar ages and elemental abundances in its thin disk, thick disk, and halo. JHU is a full member of both the fifth phase of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-V) and the Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) Subaru Strategic Program (SSP), so the assistant research scientist will have full access to the data produced by these efforts. The assistant research scientist will also be eligible to propose for JHU time on the Astrophysical Research Consortium 3.5-meter Telescope, and, in collaboration with Prof. Schlaufman, on the Magellan Telescopes.
