Job Description
The University of California Observatories (UCO) seeks an Academic Coordinator for Program Development and External Engagement to provide academic leadership for the development, implementation, and evaluation of outreach, science communication, public education, and public engagement programs that advance the mission of Lick Observatory. This position plays a central role in connecting world-class astronomical research with students, educators, community organizations, and the broader public through high-quality, evidence-based programming.
Working in collaboration with Observatory leadership, faculty, students, researchers, and external partners, the Academic Coordinator will develop and manage programs that communicate current astronomical research and foster scientific literacy. They will strengthen relationships with K–12 schools, museums, libraries, nonprofit organizations, and other community partners. The incumbent will identify new opportunities for program growth, establish strategic partnerships, and contribute to the development of proposals for grants and other external funding to support program expansion and long-term sustainability.
The Academic Coordinator will provide academic oversight for public-facing educational initiatives, ensuring that program content reflects current scientific knowledge, aligns with best practices in science education and communication, and supports the University's public service mission. Responsibilities include planning, implementing, and evaluating public education programs; supervising staff, students, and volunteers; assessing program outcomes; and recommending improvements based on participant feedback and evaluation data. The position also represents Lick Observatory at public events, educational programs, and professional meetings, and may require occasional evening and weekend work.
The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in astronomy or a closely related field, experience developing and managing educational or outreach programs, excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to build collaborative relationships across academic and community settings.
