Job Description

New Mexico State University is seeking an Intermediate Telescope Technologist to support the engineering, maintenance, and operations of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) 2.5m telescope facilities at Apache Point Observatory (APO). The SDSS-V project is a collaboration of major US and international universities and research institutions and is currently conducting a multi-year spectroscopic survey to trace the evolution of the Milky Way and nearby galaxies and observe the growth of black holes in the early Universe.  

The Intermediate Telescope Technologist will work as part of a team of engineers, telescope operators and scientists, and other technical staff to ensure the reliable performance of the 2.5m telescope and instrumentation (optical and IR spectrograph, robotic fiber positioner) and control software.  

Job duties and responsibilities:

  • Participate in the design, fabrication, assembly and commissioning of new hardware. 
  • Develop and maintain operational procedures and maintenance schedules. 
  • Plan and coordinate maintenance work
  • Perform telescope and instrument preparations, troubleshooting and repair. This includes computer operations, some programming, and data analysis.
  • Perform scheduled and emergency hardware maintenance on the telescope and other observing systems. 
  • Oversee, delegate, and evaluate work of staff on assigned projects. 
  • Prepare telescope and instruments for nightly operations. 
  • Perform electrical and mechanical troubleshooting and repair of non-telescope systems such as chillers, generators and other site infrastructure.
  • Experience in the operation of milling machines, cutters, welders, drill press, grinder and lathe machines is desirable.
  • Requires use of material handling equipment, computers and hand tools

The position entails a non-standard work schedule, including weekends and holidays as needed.
