Job Description

We welcome highly qualified students of all nationalities to apply for the PhD program at the Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy (CIRA), based at Curtin University in Perth, Australia, which forms the Curtin node of ICRAR. This program emphasises radio astronomy and radio astronomy engineering, supporting the Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO). We have a wide range of potential PhD projects to choose from. Our PhD scholarships are for 3.5 years.

CIRA forms one half of ICRAR, which is a joint venture between Curtin University and The University of Western Australia, supported by the Western Australian Government. CIRA operates the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), the precursor to the low-frequency component of the SKAO.

Why study at ICRAR/Curtin?

  • Conduct research on SKAO-related topics, such as transients, pulsars, accretion physics, fast radio bursts, radio galaxies, studies of the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR), space domain awareness, planetary defence, and radio astronomy engineering.
  • Develop your career through working in the vibrant Perth astronomy community including access to SKAO, the Australian SKA Regional Centre (AusSRC), international networks, and research infrastructure such as the MWA and the Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre.
  • Take advantage of a strong focus on translation and impact, collaborating with industry partners on projects and internships to enable a transition from academia to industry if desired.
  • Enjoy a positive, inclusive, and diverse work environment.
  • Study at a globally recognised astronomy institute.
