Flatiron Research Fellow, Machine Learning & Statistics, Center for Computational Astrophysics

POSITION SUMMARY

Applications are invited for Flatiron Research Fellowships (FRF) at the Center for Computational Astrophysics (CCA). The CCA is looking for individuals with a strong background in one of the following fields: computer science, machine learning and statistics with an interest in astrophysics cosmology and/or large datasets. Reporting to Shirley Ho, Group Leader of Cosmology X Data Science, Flatiron Research Fellows in ML/Stat will develop novel computational and inferential approaches for analysis of large datasets or generation of simulations including but not limited to the field of astrophysics.  The fellows will work on research programs supervised by the research scientists, group leaders and the director. Flatiron Research Fellows are encouraged to carry out an independent research program, collaborate with other Flatiron members (including all centers within the Flatiron Institute, https://www.simonsfoundation.org/flatiron/), and participate in the vibrant activities of the Institute such as workshops and seminars, and mentor students.

The mission of the Flatiron Institute is to advance scientific research through computational methods, including data analysis, theory, modeling and simulation. It currently houses four science centers, focused on computational astrophysics (CCA), computational biology (CCB), computational mathematics (CCM), and computational quantum physics (CCQ), and a scientific computing core. CCA's mission is to create new computational methods, tools and frameworks that allow scientists to analyze big astronomical datasets and to understand complex, multi-scale physics in astrophysical systems ranging in scales from planets to the Universe. In 2021, CCA research groups will include Astronomical Data, Compact Objects, Galaxy Formation, Gravitational Wave Astronomy, Cosmology X Data Science, Planet Formation, and Dynamics. The CCA has formal or informal partnerships with The Simons Observatory, The Terra Hunting Experiment, Sloan Digital Sky Survey V, The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, and the NASA SPHEREx mission.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

• Ph.D. in a related field

Related Skills & Other Requirements

• Expertise in computer science, machine learning and/or statistics
• Ability to do original and outstanding research in Machine Learning or Statistics
• Interest or experience in Astrophysics or a related field
• Ability to work well independently as well as in a collaborative team environment,
• Ability to handle multiple projects at the same time; and,
• Ability to present research and other types of work, internally and externally

FRF positions are two-year appointments and are generally renewed for a third year, contingent on performance. FRF receive a research budget and have access to the Flatiron Institute’s powerful scientific computing resources. FRF may be eligible for subsidized housing within walking distance of the CCA. The anticipated start dates for these positions will be between July and October 2021.
