Research Assistant Professor- Astronomy

Position Description

The Astronomy Department in the University of Washington invites applications for the position of Research Assistant Professor. We are seeking candidates who will complement and extend the department's initiatives in statistics, machine learning and computational methods applied to time domain astrophysics. This position is available immediately.

Members of the Astronomy department are active in many of the current and planned astronomical surveys including SDSS IV and V, ZTF, and WFIRST. The university was one of the founders of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) and the department maintains a large group developing the algorithms and software for scheduling and processing the LSST data. The department has a share in the 3.5m telescope at Apache Point Observatory, which is used for followup observations of transient and variable sources. We encourage applications from candidates whose research programs will exploit these or other survey and time domain data sets. To support this work, the Astronomy Department at the University of Washington (www.astro.washington.edu) seeks to fill a full-time 12 month, non-tenured, research faculty position at the level of Research Assistant  Professor. The successful candidate will be expected to lead forefront research, obtain extramural funding, and foster an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or foreign equivalent degree in Physics, Astronomy, or a closely related field. Previous experience in developing methods and software for analyzing time-domain data is required.
