Job Description

The Department of Physics at Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (UTFSM), Chile, invites applications for a faculty position at the Santiago (San Joaquin) Campus, in the field of Astrophysics. The applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in Physics or Astrophysics, with proven research productivity and commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level.

At the Santiago Campus, the Astrophysics Group (Antonio Montero-Dorta, Rory Smith, Matías Montesinos) has expertise in both observational and theoretical astrophysics and cosmology, spanning from proto-planetary disks, to galaxy evolution and the large-scale structure of the Universe. Ideally, we are looking for a candidate who can diversify our research fields, while complementing the existing expertise. Special consideration will be given to the fields of planet formation/exoplanets, extragalactic astrophysics and/or observational cosmology/large-scale structure. The rapidly growing Astrophysics Group at UTFSM also includes Yara Jaffé, Matthias Schreiber and Odette Toloza, at the Casa Central campus in Valparaíso.

The successful candidate is expected to have a commitment to excellence in research and to join the undergraduate and graduate programs, interacting closely with students. UTFSM is mainly focused on Science and Engineering with multidisciplinary activities, attracting some of the most brilliant students in these fields.

The selected candidate will have access to the Chilean ten percent of observing time at the telescopes located in our country, which include ALMA and the VLT, and also the ELT and GMT in the near future, among many others. UTFSM offers a competitive salary as compared to other Chilean institutions. Ideally, the selected candidate will begin his/her appointment by March 2025, although this can be discussed.
