The Institute for Astronomy (IfA) has an opening for a support astronomer for the NASA 3-meter Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF). The job will be located in Honolulu on the island of Oahu or in Hilo on the Island of Hawaii. The incumbent will have access, via the IfA time application review process, to all the Mauna Kea telescopes on which the University of Hawaii has guaranteed observing time.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The incumbent will join the IRTF scientific staff, and contribute to all scientific and technical aspects of operation of the observatory, including instrumentation and the support of visiting observers. He or she will work with scientific and technical personnel to ensure optimum performance of the telescope and instruments, and advocate areas of improvement in the operation. We anticipate that the incumbent will take the lead in developing, maintaining and coding data reduction packages for IRTF instruments. Additional duties include undertaking independent research, supervising students, and contributing to the academic and scientific life of the IfA. About 30% time will be available for independent personal research.
Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, or related fields; successful research experience in astronomy as demonstrated by publications and letters of recommendation; at least four years experience at the Assistant level; experience in the development of astronomical software and data reduction packages; research experience involving the use, operation, or support of astronomical instrumentation; ability to interact effectively with technical staff and visiting observers. Applicants must be capable of working in a team environment and communicating well with a wide variety of IRTF users. Ability to work at 4,200 meter altitude on Mauna Kea, and possession of a valid driver's license are also required. The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Desirable Qualifications:
Extensive experience in coding with IDL or an equivalent scientific programming language and familiarity with infrared imaging and spectroscopy.
