The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO), part of the Smithsonian Institution and a member of the Center for Astrophysics Harvard & Smithsonian, is widely recognized as the largest and most diverse astrophysical institution in the world; with a staff that carries out a broad program of research in astronomy, astrophysics, and planetary, earth, and space sciences.
We currently have an unusual opening at SAO’s Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory in Amado, AZ for an astronomer to serve as science lead and manage the day-to-day scientific investigations carried out on Mt. Hopkins with the 1.5-Meter Tillinghast, 1.3m, 1.2m, and other FLWO telescopes. This position combines hands on work with telescopes and instruments with the opportunity to conduct independent research in optical/infrared astronomy.
