Job Description

The Instituto de Alta Investigación (IAI) at Universidad de Tarapacá (UTA) invites applications for up to three Associate or Full Professor positions, depending on qualifications. The positions are anticipated to begin as early as March 2025. Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in astronomy, astrophysics, or a related field and demonstrate a strong record of independent research, evidenced by publications indexed in the WOS database and successful funding as a principal investigator.

Areas of Interest: The search is open to all areas of astronomy and astrophysics, including but not limited to:

  • Astrobiology
  • The formation of stars and planetary systems
  • Exoplanetary Science
  • The Local Universe
  • The formation and characterization of galaxies
  • High energy phenomena and supermassive black holes
  • Cosmology
  • Theoretical and computational astrophysics
  • Astronomical instrumentation

Institutional Context: The successful candidates will join the Instituto de Alta Investigación (IAI), which consists of 17 faculty members conducting research in diverse fields such as history, biology, experimental high-energy physics,
anthropology, psychology, archaeology, mathematics, theoretical physics, and astrophysics. The UTA is a public university committed to achieving international excellence standards in research and teaching.

Commitments and Expectations: The successful candidates are expected to:

  • Publish at least three articles annually in quartile Q1 journals indexed in the WOS database.
  • Apply annually for ANID research projects as Principal Investigator (e.g., FONDECYT Regular, FONDEF-Idea).
  • Establish collaborations with national and international centers of excellence.
  • Sponsor postdoctoral fellows (e.g., FONDECYT, ALMA, COMITE MIXTO).
  • Apply for ANID associative projects (ANILLO, Millennium, Basal) and international projects.
  • Teach one undergraduate course per semester (4 hrs/week). T
  • Teach graduate-level classes and participate in future graduate programs.
  • Achieve proficiency in teaching in Spanish within approximately one year, although this is not a strict requirement.

Salary and Research Resources:

  • Annual gross salary range: CLP$ 43,200,000 - $66,000,000, depending on qualifications.
  • Performance-related bonuses for publications exceeding the annual commitment (e.g., CLP$ 2,000,000 per extra Q1 article).
  • Annual research operational expenses: CLP$ 9,000,000.
  • Funds for technician personnel (for Full Professor only): Annual gross salary up to CLP$ 9,600,000.
  • Payment of incorporation fees for large projects.
  • Office and physical space for research laboratory creation.
  • Access to 10% of Chilean telescope time in international observatories, including VLT, La Silla, Gemini, Magellan, CTIO, SOAR, APEX, ALMA, and future observatories such as Rubin Observatory, CTA, ELT, and GMT.
