Job Description

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Ohio University invites applications to a tenure-track Assistant professor position in astrophysics. Preference will be given to scholars working on the Department of Energy Cosmic Frontier focuses, either observationally or theoretically.


This position will consist of 40% research, 40% teaching, and 20% service duties. The teaching duty typically consists of one lecture course at either the graduate or undergraduate level per semester and supervising PhD and undergraduate students in research. The term of appointment is expected to begin on August 16, 2025.


The department includes approximately 28 faculty, 70 graduate students, and 80 undergraduate majors. We are dedicated to educating undergraduate and graduate students through their participation in a diverse and inclusive departmental community. The successful candidate will therefore be an effective classroom teacher and supervisor of student research and will interact with students and colleagues in ways that promote equity and inclusion. The new hire will join our Astrophysical Institute. The current faculty members (Douglas Clowe and Hee-Jong Seo) have strong research interests in cosmology: Douglas Clowe is a member of the LSST-DESC collaborations, and Hee-Jong Seo is a member of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument and NASA Roman Survey Galaxy Redshift Survey Project Infrastructure team. Ohio University is a member of the MDM Consortium, which owns and operates the 1.3-meter and 2.4-meter telescopes at the MDM Observatory, on Kitt Peak in Southern Arizona. Astrophysical Institute faculty members also sponsor programming at the Ohio University Observatory.
