Job Description

Associate or Senior Editor, Nature (Astronomy and Astrophysics)

Location: New York or Berlin - Hybrid Working Model

Closing date:  March 1st 2024

Nature, the international weekly journal of science, seeks to appoint an Associate/Senior Editor to cover the broad scientific fields of astronomy and astrophysics.

Do you love science but feel that a research career isn’t enough to sate your desire to learn more about the natural world? Do you enjoy reading paper and learning of the latest updates outside your chosen area of research? If the answer is ‘yes’, you could be the person we’re looking for to join the editorial team of Nature.

Nature, the international weekly journal of science, seeks to appoint an editor that will further our aim to publish the world’s best original research across the physical and life sciences. The ideal candidate will have a strong research background in any sub-discipline within the broad research areas covering astronomy, astrophysics and space science. Planetary science will be part of this editor’s remit but the responsibility is shared with geoscientists in the team. The successful candidate will play a key role in determining the representation of all astronomical sciences in our pages, through the selection of manuscripts for publication which includes and by interacting with the relevant research communities.  This is a demanding and intellectually stimulating position and calls for a keen interest in the practice and communication of science and technology.

To be considered for the position, you will have:

Research experience to PhD level (or equivalent) in a relevant research discipline, possessing good appreciation of both fundamental and applied research objectives.

A passion for science and a thirst to learn more. You must be able to demonstrate the breadth of your interest in scientific research and technological developments, both within and beyond your speciality.

The ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research submitted to the journal from different areas of this discipline.

Be eager to interact with scientists worldwide, learn more about them and their research, and help them learn more about us and what we are looking for in the papers we seek to publish.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be fluent in English (written and spoken).

The successful candidate will report to the relevant Team Manager, but also work closely with editorial colleagues from across the Nature teams - they will be expected to play an important role in influencing the representation of their fields in the journal as a whole. They will handle original research papers and review material: the ability to offer well-reasoned and timely editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts in the light of expert advice is crucial. They will liaise extensively with editors at other journals in the Nature family and experts in the international research community. Editorial experience is not required, although applicants with significant editorial experience are encouraged to apply and will potentially be considered for a Senior Editor position.

The position is offered on a full-time, permanent basis (ideally starting August 2024), and will be located in our New York or Berlin offices, although requests for eventual placement in one of the other Nature editorial offices will be considered.

Please apply by sending your CV, covering letter (including your class of degree, a brief account of your research and other relevant experience, and details of your current salary) and a concise discussion of relevant recent scientific developments which you have found particularly exciting (explaining why).
