Job Description
The Department of Astronomy at the University of Michigan welcomes applications for a postdoctoral prize fellowship position related to science uniquely accomplished with extremely large telescopes (ELTs). Our department is participating in the instrumentation program for ESO's 39-meter ELT through our membership in the consortia developing HARMONI, METIS, ANDES, and MOSAIC, which will provide access via the Guaranteed Time Observing program. Successful applicants will undertake an independent research program of their own design that will have an impact on science that can only be done with the next generation of ELTs. Our department has international leadership in areas of star and planet formation and exoplanets, compact object and high energy astrophysics, as well as galaxy formation and evolution. Faculty-led research groups use observations, numerical simulation, and theory, as well as develop new instrumentation.
Successful applicants will have access to departmental facilities such as the Magellan telescopes, the MDM Observatories, SWIFT, high performance computing clusters, and other facilities (please see http://www.lsa.umich.edu/astro/).
