Job Description
The Astronomy Centre at Universidad Bernardo O'Higgins, Chile, invites applications for the Director of the Centre. Applicants can be from all areas of astronomy. Minimum requirements are a Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, or a closely related field, as well as an established record of excellence in research. The successful applicant must be able to speak Spanish. Previous experience in a Director role, as well as strong commitments to teaching, mentoring, outreach, and administration are highly desirable.
The city of Santiago, Chile's capital, is centrally located within the country, and is close to the Andes mountains. It is famous for its active cultural life and hosts Universidad Bernardo O'Higgins, located next to one of the largest parks in Santiago.
The Astronomy Centre was established in 2022, and currently includes 2 faculty members. Current research spans observational Galactic and extragalactic astronomy, star and cluster formation and evolution, Galactic archeology and galaxy evolution, and magneto-hydrodynamical simulations. The Centre is also interested in broadening its research base to include other fields of astronomy and astrophysics.
In addition to anticipated cluster computing facilities, the successful applicant will have access to 10% of observing time on all telescopes in Chile (e.g., ALMA, ESO), membership in large survey-mode facilities (e.g., SDSSV, LSST), and opportunities to participate in upcoming facilities (e.g., LCT , CCAT-Prime).
The successful applicant can start as soon as possible and will be expected to teach in Spanish.
