Job Description

The Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) at the Australian National University (ANU) invites applications from outstanding undergraduate and master’s students of all nationalities for fully funded PhD scholarships to commence in 2026. Candidates will be considered based on merit, with the primary criterion for selection being formal university education and training in astronomy, physics, mathematics, or astronomical instrumentation. Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated track record of research experience in astrophysics.

ANU is one of Australia's premier universities, including Nobel Prize, Prime Minister's Science Prize, and Australian Research Council Laureate and Future Fellowship recipients. Our graduating students are regularly awarded prestigious international fellowships including Fulbright, Hubble, CfA, Carnegie, ESO, Magellan, CITA, Oort, and Jansky Fellowships.

PhD research projects are at the forefront of astrophysics, ranging from cutting-edge observations with world-class telescopes to large-scale simulations on high-performance computers and innovative instrumentation research.

ANU is in Canberra, one of the few capital cities where beautiful nature reserves are integral to the urban planning. RSAA is based at Mount Stromlo within the Stromlo Forest Park, which includes world-class mountain-bike trails, and extensive equestrian and hiking trails.

PhD scholarship applications are due by 15 November 2025. For details on how to apply, including a list of documents to be submitted, eligibility requirements, and examples of available research projects and supervisors, go to:
