The University of Arizona invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position to begin in Fall 2020. We solicit applications from candidates whose areas of astrophysical research motivates an interest in the development of innovations for realizing optical/infrared observations at high angular resolution and/or contrast, including, but not limited to, interferometry or adaptive optics. For senior candidates, we seek those with a proven track record of proposing, developing, and/or supporting ambitious and large scale projects. Junior candidates should demonstrate key roles in project development and the potential for future leadership of major projects.
Steward Observatory provides access to world-class facilities for its faculty, researchers, and students. Observational facilities include the 2×8.4m Large Binocular Telescope, the 6.5m MMT, the twin 6.5m Magellan telescopes, the 10m Heinrich-Hertz Submillimeter Telescope, and the 12m APA mm-wave Telescope on Kitt Peak, plus a number of smaller telescopes. Steward Observatory is also a Founding Partner in the development and construction of the 24.5m Giant Magellan Telescope and a collaborator in the Event Horizon Telescope (submillimeter VLBI). Additionally, our faculty and students have access to a broad variety of state-of-the-art research resources. The University of Arizona College of Optical Sciences is one of the premier educational and research institutions in optics and photonics worldwide. The University-wide Research Data Center provides our faculty access to high-end, local supercomputing resources including distributed, shared-memory, and GPU architectures. These activities are complemented by world-class programs in instrumentation, including the Center for Astronomical Adaptive Optics, the Imaging Technology Lab, and leadership of the construction of NIRCam for JWST.
