Job Description

The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) is a founding member of the consortium that is building the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT). With a primary mirror of ~25m across, the goals of the GMT include characterizing the first stars and galaxies, determining the nature of dark matter and dark energy, and searching for biomarkers in the atmospheres of exoplanets. We are seeking a Deputy Program Manager to support development both of the first light instrument for the GMT (G-CLEF) and the active optics phasing and wavefront sensor at the core of the telescope (AGWS). The successful applicant will bring a mix of project, business, and technical management expertise to the development of astronomical instrumentation.  This is an opportunity to contribute to one of the most significant astronomy projects of the next decade. We look forward to hearing from people with technical management expertise and a background developing optical instruments.

The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory is a member of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Located in Cambridge MA, the CfA is arguably the largest and most diverse astrophysics institution in the world. In addition to making significant contributions to scientific research, CfA staff develop scientific instruments for ground and space-based projects using the latest engineering techniques and technology. This position of Deputy Program Manager is located within the SAO Giant Magellan Telescope Program Office.
