Job Description
Leiden Observatory invites applications for a postdoctoral position in time-domain astronomy using the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. The work with happen in the group of Dr. S. van Velzen, within the context of his NWO-funded project (https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/news/2023/06/sjoert-van-velzen-receives-vidi-grant-to-solve-riddles-from-the-universe). The successful candidate is expected to spend about 40% of their working hours on a pre-defined project related to the Rubin Observatory, the rest of the time is available for independent research. The pre-defined project involves AGN identification to be used in real-time filtering of Rubin alerts for extra-galactic transients. As such, experience with photometry and large datasets are particularly appreciated.
Applicants must have a PhD in physics or astronomy at the time of appointment. The appointment is for three years, subject to a review during the second year. The starting date is negotiable, but earlier starting dates (Summer 2025) are preferred.
Leiden Observatory, founded in 1633, is the oldest university astronomy department in the world. With about 35 faculty, over 40 postdoctoral associates and about 65 PhD students it is the largest astronomy department in the Netherlands. Leiden is a charming university town with an international flair. Most Leiden researchers have an international background. English is the common language in the department.
Compensation and Benefits
The position comes with a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits including paid vacation, sick leave, disability insurance, maternity and parental leave, and social security and retirement benefits. Medical insurance is compulsory but not included and comes to 150 euro/person/month.
