Job Description

Amherst College’s Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in astronomy at the rank of assistant professor.  The appointment will begin on July 1, 2022. Given Amherst’s commitment to cultivating a challenging and inclusive educational environment, we seek candidates who can demonstrate a commitment to teaching, mentoring and inspiring students representing a broad range of classes, genders, races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations and religions. The college seeks an individual who will have broad intellectual interests, be committed to teaching a diverse student body, and be able to establish an active research program involving undergraduates. The successful candidate is expected to advise senior thesis projects and participate in the life of the college. The individual will also be a member of the Five College Astronomy Department, a collaborative program of Amherst, Smith, Mount Holyoke, and Hampshire Colleges and the University of Massachusetts.

A Ph.D. in astronomy, astrophysics, planetary science, or a closely related field is required by the start of the position.
