Job Description

A research support position is available to participate in the Spacewatch Project's observations of asteroids. Research facilities include a large mosaic of CCDs on a 0.9-m telescope and a 1.8-meter telescope on Kitt Peak mountain in the Tohono O'odham Nation, Arizona. Additional observing is also done with larger telescopes there. Solo observing on Kitt Peak mountain includes long working hours (up to 16 hours per day on occasion) in the rarified atmosphere of 7000 feet altitude, all-night shifts including some time outdoors in the dark, and the required physical ability to perform all the tasks associated with observing, alone and without assistance. These include climbing stairs and ladders, lifting 50-lb dewars of liquid nitrogen, and ability to hear audio alarms and anomalous behavior of equipment. Salary range $31,125 - $47,243.
