Technician B Electronic
MIT’s Haystack Observatory, located in Westford, MA, seeks a technician B electronic to support the implementation, operations, and maintenance of scientific instrumentation used for studies of the space environment. This work will be conducted under the supervision of more senior technicians and engineering and scientific personnel.
Will be trained to assist in the operations, assembly, repair, and maintenance of radio and radar receivers, satellite electronics, control systems, antenna systems, computers, data networks, and a high-power microwave transmitter. Maintenance and installation activities involving the antenna systems may occasionally involve assisting in mechanical work and tower climbing. Training in industrial tower climbing, ESD and clean room procedures, and electrical, RF, and high voltage safety will be provided.
This position offers a great opportunity to learn a wide range of technical skills and apply them in a team environment.
Required Qualifications:
- Graduation from a two-year technical day school (or an equivalent military training program) in electronics
- Comfort working with computer systems in a variety of configurations (Windows, Linux, embedded computers); demonstrated the ability to work effectively within a small team
- Ability to pass a tower climbing physical and willingness and ability to climb towers
Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience integrating and repairing electronic equipment
· Basic skill with soldering, structured wiring, electronic debugging, and use of technical instrumentation (e.g., network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, and computer-based instrumentation)
· Experience with radar and radio systems or amateur radio
Must be willing to support radar operations on overtime shifts and occasionally travel to field sites. May be required to cover a different shift if coverage is needed. There may also be occasions when maintenance and operational responsibilities could require working off-hours.
U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance are required.
