Job Description
We invite applications for a doctoral student position in computational galaxy formation for a project on cosmic ray and radiation feedback. The project will explore the impact of cosmic rays and magnetic fields on the formation and evolution of galaxies. The PhD student will develop code and conduct high-resolution magneto-hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation with a multi-phase interstellar medium. Funding for this positions is provided by the ERC advanced grant PICOGAL.
Qualifications and position:
Candidates with a thorough background in Astrophysics, Physics and Computational Methods that have very good to excellent programming skills (e.g. C/C++ or Python) are encouraged to apply. Very good analytical, mathematical skills and hands-on experience in developing code and running magneto-hydrodynamics simulations are an advantage. Applicants need to have a master degree in Physics or Astrophysics at the beginning of the appointment. The initial appointment will be for two years with an expected extension up to a total of 4 years and 1 month. Additional funds are available for computational equipment and travel. The position is anticipated to start in January 2026, but this is subject to individual arrangements.

Salary and benefits are attractive and commensurate with those of public service organizations in Germany at 66% of the TV-L level E13, as well as the social benefits of the collective agreement for the public service (TV-L), incl. medical and dental insurance, maternity leave, the company pension VBL with pension for reduced earning capacity and surviving dependents as well as a subsidy for the job ticket.
