The Brown Dwarf in New York City (BDNYC) research group is seeking a Data Ingestion Specialist to expand and maintain the holdings of the SIMPLE Archive of low-mass stars, brown dwarfs, and directly imaged exoplanets. The responsibilities of this position include ingesting data from the scientific literature to the SIMPLE SQLite database using Python scripts and Github. The specialist will report to Prof. Kelle Cruz and Dr. Jackie Faherty and will work closely with both the SIMPLE and BDNYC teams.
Applicants with Bachelor’s degrees are particularly encouraged to apply.
The individual will be expected to work in-person in the Astrophysics Department of the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH).
Job Requirements:
- Interest in data management solutions and open access to data.
- Experience with Python programming, especially table manipulation.
- Ability to work independently and asynchronously.
- Interest in being part of a collaborative, supportive, and diverse research group.
Desired Qualifications:
- Familiarity with Github workflow, including issues, forks, branches, and pull requests.
- Experience with SQL.
- Excellent written, asynchronous communication skills, especially via GitHub and Slack.
- Bachelor's degree in a STEM field or equivalent software engineering experience.
